The Philippines in the Eastern Pacific Ocean include numerous islands with the capital being located in Manila on the island of Luzon. The country was influenced historically by the Spanish who were there for 300 years and then the United States which obtained the islands following the Spanish American War. Soon after the U.S. contained the islands, however, they were given their independence and have been a close ally with the United States through World War II and ever since. The language is Tagalog and English although many people in the Philippines speak Vasayan and several other languages. Much of the Philippine language is a combination of Spanish and their native tongue before the Spanish arrived. People are friendly in the Philippines and tourism has flourished in the islands for years. The only place apart from some street crime in Manila that presents a problem for tourists are some far southern parts of the Philippine Islands in Mindanao.
